Tesla stopped making the Model S and Model X. What it means if you own one
In January 2026, Tesla announced it would end Model S and Model X production. The last cars came off the Fremont line in May 2026, and that line is being converted to build Tesla's Optimus robots. If you own one, here's what it means for you.
Your warranty doesn't change
Ending production doesn't cancel the warranty that came with your car. Model S and Model X are covered by Tesla's 4-year / 50,000-mile basic warranty and an 8-year / 150,000-mile battery and drive unit warranty, whichever comes first, counted from the date the car was first delivered. Tesla sold new 2026 cars with that coverage, so it runs for years to come: basic warranty into 2030, and battery and drive unit coverage into 2034.
Service and software updates
Tesla said it will keep supporting the cars: "we will continue to support Model S & X programs for as long as people own the vehicles (service, software updates, etc)." Service, manuals and recalls are still on Tesla's support pages, and repairs are still done at Tesla service centers.
What happens to values
No new Model S or Model X are being built, so the number of these cars on the road won't grow. In our experience, demand for clean Model S and Model X cars remains strong.
What hasn't changed is what sets a specific car's value: its configuration (seats, Autopilot hardware, Full Self-Driving, wheels), miles, condition and how much warranty is left. Two cars of the same year can be worth very different amounts.
Thinking about selling?
We buy Model S and Model X from owners across the country. Tell us your VIN or plate, mileage and configuration, and a person who knows these cars sends you an offer, usually within minutes during business hours. We pay off loans and leases directly, and pickup is free anywhere in the U.S.
Each model year has its own page explaining what sets its value, for example the 2023 Model X and the 2023 Model S.
