Why configuration matters when you sell a Tesla

Most instant-offer tools price a Tesla from three things: year, model, and mileage. But two cars that match on all three can be worth thousands of dollars apart. Here is what actually separates them, and what we look at before making an offer.

Trim: Plaid, All-Wheel Drive, Performance, Long Range

Trims are separate markets with separate buyers. A pricing tool that lumps them together will usually underpay for the more desirable one.

Seating

On a Model X, five, six, and seven-seat cars appeal to different families, and six-seat captain's chairs are often the hardest to find. On a Model Y, the seven-seat option is uncommon. Generic book values rarely capture this.

Autopilot hardware: HW3 or HW4

Two cars from the same model year can have different computers and cameras. Many shoppers specifically search for HW4, so it affects how quickly a car sells and for how much.

Full Self-Driving

Whether FSD was purchased on the car, rather than subscribed to, is part of its value. We ask about it and check it.

Wheels, color, and options

Larger wheel packages, interior colors, and options like the tow package change who wants the car and what they will pay.

Remaining Tesla warranty

The basic and battery warranties run on time and miles from the original delivery date. A car with meaningful warranty left is worth more to the next owner.
