Model X vs Model Y L: what we found after buying a new Model Y L
Tesla's six-seat Model Y L launched in the U.S. in July 2026. We bought one new, delivered in September 2026, and spent time with it next to the Model X, which we know well. Our short version: the Model Y L is a great car, but it's still a Model Y. It's a longer crossover, not a replacement for a Model X. This is our experience, and we're open about the fact that we know the Model X best.
Front seats and interior
The Model Y L's new front seats add thigh support, but they still feel narrower than the Model X front seats. The new dashboard trim looked cheap to us, and overall the Model X interior looks and feels more upscale.
Second and third row
The Model Y L has good space in the second row. Getting to the third row is the problem: the only way back is through the narrow gap between the two second-row seats, which makes it very hard for an adult to get in.
In a six-seat Model X, the motorized second-row seat moves forward, so you reach the third row from behind the second row instead of squeezing between the seats. That's a big advantage for anyone who actually uses the third row.
One point in the Model Y L's favor: its second-row seats fold. The six-seat Model X's second-row seats don't, because of the motors underneath them.
Ride
The Model X has air suspension, and in our experience it floats over bumps in a way the Model Y L doesn't.
Doors
The Model X falcon wing doors aren't just for show. The opening is huge, so putting a car seat into the second or third row is simple.
The Model X front doors are powered too. They open from the screen or the button on the door panel, and from the Tesla app: standing a few feet away, you tap the front door on your phone and it opens for you. We don't know of many other cars, if any, that can do that.
Screens
The Model X has its own screen in front of the driver, showing a full Full Self-Driving visualization, the side cameras and your speed. That leaves the center screen, which tilts toward the driver or passenger on cars built from about April 2022, free for a wide navigation map or entertainment. Nothing in the Model Y L matches this setup.
Which one?
If you want a brand-new car with Tesla's latest updates, the Model Y L makes sense. If you regularly carry adults or car seats in the back, or you want a more upscale car, the Model X is still the better family car in our view. Tesla stopped building the Model X in May 2026, so today that means a used one. See what Tesla ending Model S and X production means for owners.
